Cardiff homes and streets before they’re listed

Last updated: 7 October 2026

Cardiff runs from its waterfront at Cardiff Bay to suburbs such as Llandaff, around its cathedral, and Rhiwbina in the north. With HomePinr you can pin the particular Cardiff homes and streets you’d love to live in, even if nothing there is for sale, and homeowners can claim their property to see that interest.

What “pre-market” means on HomePinr

On HomePinr, pre-market refers to homes that are not currently listed for sale on the open market. Buyers can register interest in those homes or streets, but a pin does not mean the property is available or that the homeowner intends to sell.

Cardiff, its council area and the wider region

“Cardiff” can mean different things, so it helps to be clear before you pin.

Cardiff city centre

The compact centre around Cardiff Castle, with Bute Park running north from the castle along the River Taff.

The Cardiff Council area

Cardiff Council covers far more than the centre: suburbs such as Llandaff, Rhiwbina, Whitchurch and Llanishen, and communities on the edge of the city such as Radyr and Lisvane, which have their own community councils.

Surrounding council areas

Towns such as Penarth and Barry (Vale of Glamorgan), Caerphilly (Caerphilly County Borough) and Pontypridd (Rhondda Cynon Taf) have their own councils and are not part of Cardiff. Newport is a separate city with its own council. All of these councils, with Cardiff, belong to the Cardiff Capital Region, a regional body of ten councils across South East Wales — but the region is a partnership, not a larger Cardiff.

CF postcodes

CF postcodes stretch well beyond the city, covering places such as Penarth, Barry and Caerphilly. A CF postcode doesn’t on its own mean a home is in Cardiff, so check the full address on the map.

Cardiff neighbourhoods to explore

Cardiff Bay

The former docklands are now home to the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament building, and the Wales Millennium Centre, alongside the red-brick Pierhead Building in the photo above. The Cardiff Bay Barrage, completed in 1999, runs about 1.1km from the docks to Penarth and created the freshwater bay. A circular walking and cycling trail of about 10km links the Bay, the Barrage and Penarth. Cardiff Bay station is on Lloyd George Avenue.

Roath and Penylan

Roath Park, laid out between 1887 and 1894, was the first publicly owned park in Cardiff, and its large lake remains its best-known feature. Cadw lists it as a Grade I registered historic park, and the streets around it fall within Cardiff Council’s Roath Park and Roath Park Lake and Gardens conservation areas. Neighbouring Penylan, to the east, is worth exploring alongside it. The map example further down this page is centred on Cottrell Road in Roath.

Pontcanna and Canton

Pontcanna sits beside Pontcanna Fields and Llandaff Fields, which together form a large stretch of open parkland on the west bank of the Taff; Cadw registers them as a historic park, noting their long lime avenue. Part of the area lies within the Cathedral Road conservation area. Next door in Canton is Chapter, an arts centre on Market Road founded in 1971.

Llandaff

Llandaff grew up around its cathedral. The present building dates from around 1120, though there has been a Christian site here since at least the 6th century, and it is listed Grade I by Cadw. Llandaff has been a conservation area since 1968. Llandaf station serves the area.

Rhiwbina

In north Cardiff, Rhiwbina is known for its early 20th-century garden village, which Cardiff Council protects as the Rhiwbina Garden Village conservation area. Rhiwbina has its own station, off Pen-y-Dre.

Bute Park, behind Cardiff Castle, is described by its own official site as “the green heart of the city” and is a Cadw Grade I registered park — worth bearing in mind if you’re looking at streets near the centre.

Narrowing your search to particular streets

These streets are examples of how to search. They don’t mean anyone has pinned or claimed homes there.

Buying your first home in Cardiff

Many first-time buyers start with a place rather than a property — close to work, family or a station or transport link you use regularly. While you save or arrange a mortgage in principle, you can pin the Cardiff streets and homes you’d consider and refine them as your plans firm up. A pin isn’t an offer and doesn’t commit you to anything.

For Cardiff homeowners: claiming your property

If you own a home in Cardiff, you can claim it on HomePinr for free and see any buyer interest recorded for your home and your street. Claiming isn’t a decision to sell, and you choose whether to reply to anyone.

Claiming is a self-declaration: HomePinr does not currently check ownership independently. Each property can only be claimed once.

How a match works

A match happens when a buyer’s pin on a home or street overlaps with a claimed property, whichever comes first. Both sides can be notified, and a conversation can start through HomePinr’s messaging. Homeowners see buyers by general labels rather than names. A match doesn’t guarantee a reply, a viewing, a sale or a purchase.

Using HomePinr alongside Rightmove and Zoopla

Rightmove and Zoopla help buyers search homes currently marketed for sale. HomePinr works alongside them by letting buyers register interest in Cardiff homes and streets that aren’t currently listed. It doesn’t replace an estate agent or a property portal.

Cardiff FAQs

Can I pin a Cardiff home that isn’t for sale?

Yes. A pin records your interest; it doesn’t mean the home is available.

Is Penarth part of Cardiff?

No. Penarth is in the Vale of Glamorgan, though it shares a CF postcode and is linked to Cardiff Bay by the Barrage. You can still pin homes there.

Does a CF postcode mean a home is in Cardiff?

Not always. CF postcodes also cover towns in neighbouring council areas, so check the full address.

Does a Cardiff homeowner have to be planning to sell?

No. Claiming a property lets you see recorded interest. It isn’t a decision to sell.

Does HomePinr replace Rightmove, Zoopla or an estate agent?

No. HomePinr works alongside them for homes and streets that aren’t currently listed.
